Four Weeks Until Earth Day!

Do something MEANINGFUL this Earth Day,  April 22.

The rhetoric around saving the planet is about to go into full gear as Earth Day approaches.

We are often exhorted to turn off our lights for Earth Hour. In some years, our city actually used more electricity during that hour!

So if sitting in the dark doesn’t light your fire, but you want to do your part to conserve the Earth and its resources, why not learn how to grow your own food?

Growing your own food has many environmental benefits. The most obvious is the short distance between your back yard to your table. No diesel is burned!

Gardening in collaboration with nature sinks carbon dioxide into the soil where it benefits plants.

You are in control of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and other poisons and hopefully, you choose not to use them. Their side effects include sterilizing the soil, rendering it lifeless and unable to produce without more “drugs”.

Many chemicals are taken up into the plant and then eaten by you! There are bushels of scientific studies proving that these chemicals contribute to a myriad of dis-ease in humans.

When you grow your own food, you significantly reduce the “poison load” on the Earth.

The Earth benefits and you benefit too.

Growing food can save you money and improve your mental and physical health.

Vegetable Gardens Trending

At Grow Food Calgary we know the importance of growing food.

We’ve noticed the growing interest in gardening.

And we’re not the only ones!

At the Calgary Home and Garden Show in early March, HGTV Host Carson Arthur discussed ways to improve the value of your home for resale.

One of his tips was to add a garden to your yard. Millennials are buying homes and they want vegetable gardens.

Chelsie Anderson spoke with Carson at the show. The  author, editor, speaker, gardener, landscaper and goodwill ambassador loves the Grow Food Calgary concept, and he graciously agreed to speak on camera.

Here’s what Carson told us:
