Five Simple Ways to Improve Your Gut Health

Rachel Joy Olsen

Gut health is vital for digestion and optimum immune-system function.

Here are five simple ways you can improve your gut health:

#1: Eat a large variety of foods.

Hundreds of species of healthy bacteria  live in our guts. They require nutrients from a variety of different sources. If you eat the same things every day you may be killing off bacteria that support gut health.

#2: Eat an abundance of veggies, fruit, legumes and beans

These foods are high in fibre, which healthy bacteria love to digest! Studies have also shown that eating a diet rich in these foods may prevent the growth of unhealthy bacteria. And you can grow your own organic, healthy produce.  Grow Food Calgary will show you how.

#3: Eat fermented foods.
These foods are usually rich in lactobacilli, which is one of the healthy bacteria. Healthy fermented food choices include: kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut, tempeh and nut- based yogurt. The October session of Grow Food Calgary includes a demonstration on how to make sauerkraut.

#4: Eat Sprouts

Sprouts contain an abundance of enzymes, which help the body break down food and assist with nutrient absorption in the digestive tract. Sprouts are high in fibre, which helps to keep a healthy flow, reduce constipation and diarrhea. Studies show that sprouts are an excellent food to eat to prevent colorectal cancer.

At Grow Food Calgary on April 22, 2017, I will be showing our gardeners how to immediately grow their own fresh, healthy sprouts.

#5: Reduce intake of artificial sweeteners and sugar.

Sugar and artificial sweeteners have negative effects on blood sugar and may promote the growth of unhealthy bacteria shown to cause disease when present in large numbers.

Take care of your gut and your gut will take care of you.
